Depending on which legend you believe, the concoction we call chili originated with 17th century Southwestern American Indians, a group of Spanish settlers in San Antonio, or Texas adventurers and cowboys out on the trail.

One place that doesn’t claim to have originated the dish is Mexico, but that doesn’t mean a Mexican ingredient can’t add a whole new dimension — and that’s what happens in today’s “The H Word” recipe for Chocolate Turkey Chili.

“The H Word” chef Mary Ann Suprenant begins with two pounds of ground turkey and adds the heat with garlic, onion, chiles and chili powder. Then she balances it all out with an ounce of Mexican chocolate.

The whole thing cooks in about 30 minutes and is served over steamed rice.
