LONDON — Britain’s National Health Service is fighting back against right-wing critics of President Barack Obama’s health care plan and the British health care system.

A Twitter campaign backed by a government minister is urging Britons to express their appreciation for the health service.

The Department of Health sent The Associated Press a fact sheet today showing how it stacked up to its trans-Atlantic counterpart.

The department says it isn’t seeking to insert itself into the heated U.S. debate over health care but merely wants to quash what it calls “ridiculous claims” circulating in the American media.

One U.S. politician, Republican Rep. Paul Broun, says that Britain and Canada “don’t have the appreciation of life as we do evidently.”
