ROCKFORD — The Winnebago County Health Department is scheduled to begin vaccinating Rockford School District students against the H1N1 flu virus at four elementary schools Tuesday morning.

The department expects to vaccinate a total of 12,369 students, just over 42 percent of the district’s approximately 29,400 students, in seven days of shot clinics that will conclude Wednesday, Dec. 9, at Guilford and Jefferson high schools. Teachers and other staff who come in contact with the students also will be able to be vaccinated.

“The average number of student vaccinations per day will be 1,550,” Health Department Community Relations Manager Sue Fuller said, “and the most we will do on one day is about 2,600.

“It’s an aggressive schedule. We want to get everybody completed before the Christmas holiday break, at least the first round. When we’re finished with Rockford, we move on to the Harlem district.”

Fuller said the department already has vaccinated about 10,000 children in parochial schools and the county’s public school districts outside Rockford. She said the department received between 7,000 and 8,000 doses of vaccine Wednesday.

Second dose shots for children 10 and under will be scheduled in January, she said.

Mark Bonne, chief communications officer for the Rockford district, said parents will be able to be at their child’s school during the vaccinations.

He also said the district does not intend to turn away any child who has turned in a signed permission slip before the Health Department team arrives at their school, even though the deadline for turning in permission slips was two weeks ago.

Fuller also said individuals not served through the schools still may call the Health Department at 815-720-4006 or 815-720-4007 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays to schedule appointments.

She said anyone who needs a permission slip to have their child vaccinated at their school may download one at wchd.org.
