    Across the country, many programs that belong to the Meals on Wheels Association of America have lost volunteers who can’t afford the gas. Nearly half the programs have eliminated routes or consolidated meal services. Other programs are delivering more frozen or shelf-stable meals to cut the number of delivery days.

    Caleb Richard happily licked a lollipop after his first eye exam this afternoon, proof that the process wasn’t really all that scary. The 5-year-old was in the office of Family Optical Centre Inc. because a state law that took effect Jan. 1 requires comprehensive eye exams for children entering kindergarten or enrolling for the first time in public, private or parochial elementary schools.
